WiHunt Privacy Policy
Last updated October 23, 2026
This policy covers the WiHunt apps for iPhone, Apple Watch and Android. WiHunt is developed by Bruce Cheek ("we"). We don't run any servers, and the apps don't collect, store or sell your personal information.
Summary
- No account. You never sign up or sign in.
- No ads, analytics or tracking. The apps contain no advertising, analytics, crash-reporting or tracking code, and we don't track you across other apps or websites.
- Your data stays on your device. Your licenses, harvests, wishlist and settings are stored only on your phone (and your Apple Watch, if you use it). We never receive them.
- Location is used to give you answers, not to track you. WiHunt uses your location only while you use the app, to calculate shooting hours and look up your hunting zones. Your location is never stored by us or linked to you.
- We don't sell or share personal information.
Information stored on your device
WiHunt keeps the following only in the app's storage on your device:
- Licenses, stamps, permits and harvest authorizations you add, including units, periods and notes
- Harvests you log, including date, species, weapon, notes, GameReg confirmation numbers, and the location and county if you choose to record them
- Your wishlist of species
- Your zones, settings and alert preferences
- Your last known location and detected hunting zones, so the app opens on your last spot and works without a signal
- On iPhone, when the app last asked for a tip or an App Store rating and which days you opened it during an open season, so it doesn't ask too often
We have no access to this information. Deleting the app deletes it.
Device backups. Your device's own backup may include this information, depending on your settings: iCloud Backup or a computer backup on iPhone, and Android's backup to your Google account on Android. Those backups are handled by Apple or Google under their privacy policies, and we can't access them.
Location
With your permission, WiHunt uses your device's location while the app is open. It doesn't use your location in the background. Location is optional: without it, you can pick your zones by hand or use the Madison, Wisconsin demo location in Settings.
Your location is used to:
- Calculate sunrise, sunset and legal shooting hours. This happens entirely on your device.
- Look up your hunting zones and deer management unit. The app sends your coordinates over an encrypted connection to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' public map services (dnrmaps.wi.gov), which return the zones at that point. The request contains only the coordinates: no name, account or device identifier. Like any website, those servers may keep standard request logs under the DNR's own policies.
- Show your county. Your device's built-in location service turns your coordinates into a county name: Apple's on iPhone and Apple Watch, Google's on Android. These are handled under Apple's and Google's privacy policies.
- Record where a harvest happened, only if you tap to add your location to a harvest entry.
We never receive your location. WiHunt is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Other features and services
- Notifications. Shooting-hours alerts and harvest registration reminders are scheduled on your device. No push notification service is used.
- Tips. Tips in the iPhone app's Settings › Support WiHunt are optional and unlock nothing. They're in-app purchases handled entirely by Apple: we never see your name, Apple Account or payment details, and Apple reports only sales totals to us. The app reads your purchase history from Apple on your device to show how many tips you've left. In the US, the app may also link to PayPal or Venmo for a direct tip; if you use them, they handle the payment under their own privacy policies.
- Apple Watch, widgets and Live Activities. The iPhone app sends your licenses and zones directly to your paired Apple Watch through Apple's watch connection, and shares shooting hours with WiHunt's widgets and lock screen countdown on the same device. This information doesn't pass through us.
- Web links. Links to the DNR regulations, regulation sources and GameReg open those websites in an in-app browser. Those sites are run by others and have their own privacy policies.
- Bug reports by email. If you tap "Contact me · report a bug", your email app opens a message to us containing the app version, regulation data year, device model, operating system version, language and time zone. Nothing is sent unless you choose to send it. If you do, we receive your email address and what you wrote. We use it only to answer you and fix problems, and we'll delete it on request.
Your choices
- Turn location access on or off at any time in your device's settings (Settings › WiHunt on iPhone; Settings › Apps › WiHunt › Permissions on Android).
- Turn off automatic zone detection in WiHunt's My Zones screen to stop zone lookups.
- Turn notifications on or off in WiHunt's Settings or your device's settings.
- Delete any license or harvest in the app, or delete the app to remove all of its data from your device.
Children
WiHunt is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
Changes to this policy
If the apps change how they handle information, we'll update this policy and the "last updated" date at the top. Changes that matter will also be noted in the app's release notes.
